Share with Your Friends!

Are you the one who has decided to start a blog but struggling with choosing a niche for blogging?

Or do you have so many ideas in your mind and find it almost impossible to choose one? This can be so overwhelming that many people just give in to the idea of blogging because they fail to choose a niche. I also have been there, so I can well understand.

But you will not have to do that.

Because luckily you have landed at the right place.

I will guide you through, to decide a specific and profitable niche by just following a few simple steps.

What is a Niche?

A niche is a particular part of the market.

In the blogging world, you can understand niche as a particular category about which you will write.

Why is it Important to Select a Niche for Blogging?

It is important to select a niche so that you can stay focused while you create content for your blog.

If one day you write about making money online and the next day you share a baking recipe. You will fall in no man’s land.

Keep one thing in mind. You cannot blog for everyone. Because when you try to write about everything and anything you will fail to attract the right audience.

So, in order to make an impact, attract the right audience, and eventually make money from your blog, you undoubtedly need to choose a niche.

What is the Difference Between a Broad Niche and a Narrow Niche?

A broad niche is one in which you talk about a larger category. For example, a food blog with baking, cooking, salad, and smoothie recipes is a broad niche.

Because it is less specific and is targeting a wide range of audience.

On the other hand, a narrow niche is one which is more specific and targeted.

For example, a blog about low-carb recipes is one with a specific and narrow niche. Such a niche will target a relevant group of audience.

Which is Better? A Broad or Narrow Niche?

You will find a lot of people telling you to pick a narrow niche from the very beginning if you want to be successful in blogging.

But this is not that simple.

It is good to have a specific niche so that you can target a specific audience. But this might not be possible in the beginning of your blogging journey.

In fact, this restriction of choosing a narrow niche from the beginning has been so overwhelming for me, that I was never able to start a blog.

I seriously think I would have started a blog many years earlier if I didn’t fall into this trap of choosing a ‘narrow niche’ from the very beginning.

I will not let this happen to you. I will guide you on what you should be doing instead.

To start a money-making blog, you definitely need to have a niche, but it does not necessarily have to be a narrow one.

You can start with a broader niche and start writing blog posts. In the process of writing the blog posts and creating content you will naturally find out the categories and topics that you enjoy writing about. And you will also figure out what type of content is attracting your audience.

This way with time you will find your specific niche.

So, to put it together, you can start with a broad niche, so that you don’t get overwhelmed with the idea of choosing a narrow niche. And with time you can narrow it down get more specific. This will also help you rank in search engines like Google.

How to Select a Niche for Blogging?

Now let’s come to an all-important topic, and that is selecting a niche for blogging.

Selection of a niche can be tricky, because when you decide to start a blog. You can be in two kinds of circumstances.

  1. You have so many ideas in your mind to write about
  2. You may have no clue what to write about

But I guarantee, your stay here will be worth it. And at the end, you will be able to select a niche for your blog.

To make it easier for you to choose a niche consider the following parameters.

1. Passion

When choosing a niche most important is to find out what you are passionate about.

It might be easy for most of the people to find out their passion. But still, there are people who find it difficult to figure out what interests them the most.

For doing that, I recommend you sit quietly at a peaceful place, and start brainstorming. Write down whatever comes to your mind.

And then go through the list and choose 3 things you like the most.

And then think about which one of these three is my favorite and I can talk and write about it for years to come.

Most probably this will leave you with one or two options.

But still, if you can’t decide among the three, further steps will help you with this.

    2. Specific

A second important step is to find a topic or category that is specific.

By being specific I mean choose a category that is not very broad and not very narrow.

    This is very important.

Choosing a broad niche or a very narrow niche can make your blogging journey difficult.

For example, while practicing the above-mentioned exercise you are left with two options that you are passionate about.

One of them is gardening and the other one is the types of soil that are used for gardening.

Now if you start writing about gardening, it is a broad niche because you have to cover all aspects of gardening.

On the other hand, if you just write about the types of soil that are good for gardening is a very narrow niche.

So, it will be better to get a little more specific and marry both ideas. For example, a kitchen garden will be a good niche.

It covers both of your passions gardening and the types of soils required for gardening.

It is not as broad as gardening and not as narrow as the types of soil needed for gardening.

This way you get to a specific niche according to your passion.

If you find it difficult to get specific, you can get help from related searches on Google. This will help you get more specific.

    3. Knowledge

The main aim of most of blogs is to impart education. And you can only educate your readers if you have some knowledge about that specific topic.

By saying this I don’t mean that you should be an expert in that from day 1. But at least you should be knowing the basics of what you intend to share.

    It is very important.

Your readers will judge very soon whether you know something or not.

So do your research, learn the basics, and start delivering your knowledge to your readers.

And as time will pass you can always learn more and strengthen your knowledge.

    4. Market Research

Another important aspect is to find out is that, is there any audience for what you are writing about.

Because only this way you will be able to monetize your blog.

One of the best ways to do that is to use Google Trends.

Type your niche topic in the search bar and see its trend in the last 5 years. You can also choose your target country here.

For example, when I typed kitchen garden, the trend is quite consistent, and people are searching for it. This shows there is an audience that is interested in this niche.

    5. Profitable niche for blogging

Now let’s talk about finding out how profitable a niche can be.

By saying profitable I don’t mean to find a niche that will start making hundreds of dollars overnight.

Let’s be realistic. There is no such niche and there is no such shortcut formula.

By finding a profitable niche I mean to find a niche that can be monetized in various ways. These various ways can be:

    • Ads
    • Affiliate products
    • Your own product – digital or physical

You don’t need to worry about ads, because they can be placed on almost all types of blogs until and unless they are not violating the rules.

Two main aspects that need consideration are affiliate programs and products. To look for affiliate products you can search on big websites like Amazon, Share A Sale, Impact, Digistore24 and commission Junction.

Another way of searching for affiliate programs for your niche is to go to Google, type your niche, and write affiliate programs with it.

    niche specific affiliate programs

This will show you the search results of affiliates in your niche.

The other thing that tells you about the profitability of your blog is the ability to make and sell your own product.

No matter whether you decide to sell a physical or a digital product, there should be a market for that product.

Making and selling your product is one of the most important and profitable ways of monetizing your blog.

At the start when you are just starting your blog, it’s not important, or rather it’s not possible to have a clearly defined product in your mind.

But at least you should have some idea of what sort of product will you be creating and selling in the future.

I hope these five steps will help you decide the niche for your blog.
